Do Acupuncture needles hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin—typically no larger than a strand of hair—and most people do not feel the insertion at all. Once a needle reaches its target depth, you may notice a mild sensation, such as aching, heaviness, warmth, or tingling. This is a positive sign, showing that the treatment is helping to balance your body.

What to Expect on Your First Visit!

Before your first appointment, please complete and submit the new patient forms through the patient portal, or plan to arrive 15 minutes early. This gives us extra time together to ensure a thorough visit. Your first session will last approximately 90 minutes. During this time, we will review your medical history, diet, lifestyle, and primary health concerns in depth. Your tongue and pulse will be examined to help determine a Chinese medical diagnosis.

Acupuncture points will then be selected based on your symptoms, diagnosis, and overall health. Needles are typically inserted while you lie face up, though we may occasionally need access to your back, in which case you’ll be asked to lie face down. Needles are generally retained for 25–30 minutes. After the session, we may recommend a Chinese herbal formula and provide suggestions for diet and lifestyle adjustments to support your ongoing wellness.

What should I do before my session?

  • Disclose all medications and supplements in your new patient paperwork.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Pants and sleeves may need to be rolled up to the knees and elbows.

  • Avoid coffee and other stimulants several hours before your appointment and be sure to come hydrated.

  • Eat a meal or snack 2-3 hours before your session. Acupuncture on an empty stomach may cause light-headedness or dizziness.

  • Don’t rush! Arrive a little early and plan to stay for your full session.

What should I do after my session?

  • Some people may feel light-headed, which is normal due to renewed and increase of energy flow. These effects are typically short-lived.

  • Avoid coffee and other stimulants for several hours after your session, and continue to stay hydrated.

  • Choose warm, cooked meals made with natural, nourishing ingredients. Limit excess sugar, overly processed foods and greasy meals.

  • Take it easy! Avoid strenuous physical or mental activity for the remainder of the day.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on your constitution, condition, and how your body responds to acupuncture. Typically, chronic issues require a longer course of treatment than acute concerns. Following the recommended treatment plan and being mindful of diet and lifestyle can significantly support your progress and overall results.

Can I receive Acupuncture during pregnancy?

Yes! Acupuncture is safe and can help pregnant women manage common discomforts such as morning sickness, stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, heartburn, constipation, backaches, and headaches. After childbirth, acupuncture may support hormonal balance and help alleviate fatigue, lower back and pelvic pain, and postpartum mood changes.
